Health-department & code relevance

Hand sinks are mandatory and can't be used for anything else — dishwashing or food prep in a hand sink is a violation. Code requires them conveniently located in prep, warewashing, and bar areas, supplied with warm water (≥100°F), soap, and single-use towels (FDA Food Code 5-202.12, 6-301). An ADA model is often required for public-accessible areas.

Common questions

How many hand sinks do I need?

Enough that one is conveniently reachable from every food-prep, warewashing, and bar area — inspectors flag a hand sink that's too far from the line. Bars and prep stations typically each need their own.

Can I wash dishes in a hand sink?

No. A hand sink is for handwashing only — using it for dishes or food prep is a health-code violation. Dishwashing needs a separate compartment sink.
