Commercial Kitchen Electrical Requirements

Commercial kitchen electrical basics: dedicated circuits, voltage and phase (120/208/240V, single vs three-phase), GFCI, nameplate amps, hood interlocks — and why you need a licensed electrician.
Educational, not legal advice. Codes vary by jurisdiction — always confirm with your local health department and building authority (AHJ).

Commercial kitchen wiring is governed by the National Electrical Code (NEC) as adopted and amended by your local authority. This is a plain-English overview — the actual design and permit must come from a licensed electrician.

Rule of thumb: gather every appliance's nameplate voltage, phase and amps, hand the list to a licensed electrician, and pull a permit. Guessing here fails inspection and trips breakers on opening day.

Frequently asked

Does commercial kitchen equipment need special outlets?
Often yes. Many commercial appliances need a dedicated circuit and may run on 208V or 240V, single- or three-phase — not a standard 120V wall outlet. Match the building's electrical service to each unit's nameplate before buying.
What's the difference between single-phase and three-phase?
Single-phase power is typical of smaller spaces; three-phase delivers more power efficiently to large equipment and is common in bigger commercial buildings. Some heavy equipment is offered in both — order the version that matches your service.
Do commercial kitchens need GFCI outlets?
Yes — GFCI protection is required for receptacles near sinks and other wet locations. Your electrician will place them per the NEC as adopted locally.
How many amps does a commercial refrigerator use?
It depends on the model — read the amperage off the unit's nameplate/data plate and size the circuit to that. Don't estimate; the plate is the number your electrician needs.
